Odia Typing Online – ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଟାଇପିଂ

Updated 26 October 2026

Type Odia with the keyboard you already have

Notelo is a free online Odia notepad. Type each word the way it sounds, in English letters, and it appears in Odia script as you type. You don't need an Odia keyboard, extra software or a special font. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

The writing area is large on purpose. Odia letters have vowel signs above, below and beside them, and they are hard to read at small sizes. Here the text starts at 30 pixels, and you can make it bigger from the settings.

How to type in Odia, in three steps

  1. Click in the notepad and type a word in Roman letters, for example namaskAra.
  2. Watch it turn into Odia as you type. A small box under the word shows the letters you typed so far. Backspace removes one Roman letter at a time, so a mistake costs one key. Esc puts the word back in English, which is handy for names and English words in the middle of Odia text.
  3. Press space to start the next word. When you're done, copy the note, download it as a text file, or simply leave it: notes save themselves as you type.

Press Ctrl+M at any time to switch between Odia and English typing.

Four rules cover almost every word

Odia has more letters than English, so a few English letters do double duty. Once you know these four rules you can type any word from its sound.

Two consonants in a row join on their own: shAnti → ଶାନ୍ତି, dharma → ଧର୍ମ, chandra → ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର. The full key list is on the Odia ITRANS chart, and every letter with its English sound is on the Odia alphabet chart. If you're new to this, the practice lessons take about ten minutes.

Speak instead of typing

Tap the microphone and speak Odia, and your words are written into the note in Odia script wherever your browser's speech service understands Odia (try Chrome). You can also speak Sanskrit or Hindi and have it written in Odia script, which is useful for shlokas and bhajans and works in Chrome, Safari and usually Edge. Read more about Odia voice typing.

Made for Sanskritised Odia

Many Odia texts, from prayer books to letters, mix in Sanskrit words, and these need letters everyday keyboards leave out. Notelo types all of them: saMskRta → ସଂସ୍କୃତ, namaH → ନମଃ, so.aham → ସୋଽହମ୍, || → ॥. If you paste Sanskrit written in Devanagari, it is written in Odia script. See Sanskrit in Odia script for every mark and its key.

Questions

How do I type in Odia with an English keyboard?

Type the sound of each word in Roman letters and Notelo writes it in Odia as you go. Typing namaskAra gives ନମସ୍କାର, and rAma gives ରାମ. Press space to finish a word. You don't need to install an Odia keyboard or change any settings on your computer.

Is Notelo free? Do I need an account?

Notelo is free and has no account, sign-up or ads. Open the page and start typing.

Where are my Odia notes saved?

Your notes are saved in this browser on this device as you type. Nothing is uploaded. If you clear your browser's site data, the notes go with it, so use the download button to keep a .txt copy of anything important.

Why do capital letters matter?

Odia has two kinds of t, d, n and sh. Lowercase letters give the soft (dental) ones and capitals give the hard (murdhanya) ones: t is ତ and T is ଟ, n is ନ and N is ଣ, sh is ଶ and Sh is ଷ. Capitals also make vowels long: A gives କା, I gives କୀ and U gives କୂ.

How do I write ଋ, as in କୃଷ୍ଣ?

Type R straight after the consonant: kRShNa gives କୃଷ୍ଣ and sRShTi gives ସୃଷ୍ଟି. RRi works too, as in standard ITRANS. At the start of a word, R on its own gives ଋ.

Can I type Odia by voice?

Yes, where your browser's speech service understands Odia. Tap the microphone and speak: try the Odia option first in Chrome or Edge. If your browser can't listen in Odia, pick the Sanskrit option, which listens in Hindi and writes Odia script; it also works in Safari. Firefox has no speech recognition.

Can I paste Odia text into WhatsApp, Word or Facebook?

Yes. Notelo writes standard Unicode Odia, so the copy button gives text you can paste into WhatsApp, Gmail, Word, Google Docs, Facebook or any other app that shows Odia.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On Android and iPhone the notepad fills the screen and the microphone button sits under your thumb. If your keyboard changes the words you type, turn off autocorrect for best results.

Does it work offline?

Yes, after your first visit the notepad opens even without internet, and your notes are always on your device. Voice typing still needs an internet connection.
