These lessons teach you to type Odia with an ordinary English keyboard. There are five short levels with six words each. Each level adds one idea, and by the end you can type any Odia or Sanskrit word from its sound. Most people finish in ten to fifteen minutes.
The practice panel is open next to the notepad (on a phone, tap Practice at the top). Look at the Odia word, type the keys you think make it, and watch your answer appear in Odia. It turns green when it matches. Press Enter for the next word. Stuck? Show keys gives the answer. Your progress is saved in this browser.
Every Odia consonant already carries an “a” sound, so you type it: mana → ମନ, vana → ବନ, gagana → ଗଗନ. This is the one habit English speakers need to build. Typing man instead gives ମନ୍, with a halanta, which is how Sanskrit marks a consonant with no vowel.
Capital A, I and U give the long vowels. Lowercase gives the short ones: rAma → ରାମ, sItA → ସୀତା, pUjA → ପୂଜା.
Odia has a second, “hard” set of letters, made with the tongue curled back. They are the capitals: T Th D Dh N Sh give ଟ ଠ ଡ ଢ ଣ ଷ. Try gaNesha → ଗଣେଶ, kaNTha → କଣ୍ଠ, viShNu → ବିଷ୍ଣୁ.
Type two consonants in a row and they join by themselves: dharma → ଧର୍ମ. Capital R after a consonant gives the ṛ sign, so kRShNa → କୃଷ୍ଣ and sRShTi → ସୃଷ୍ଟି. Two letters have their own shortcut: xa → କ୍ଷ and GYa → ଜ୍ଞ.
Now the Sanskrit marks: M for anusvara, H for visarga, OM for ଓଁ, and | for the danda. Finish with OM namaH shivAya → ଓଁ ନମଃ ଶିବାୟ and sarve bhavantu sukhinaH → ସର୍ବେ ଭବନ୍ତୁ ସୁଖିନଃ.
These are the words in the lessons, with the keys that type them. Try each one in the panel before you look.
Every consonant already carries an “a”. Write the a at the end too: mana, not man.

man gives ମନ୍. Add the final a: mana → ମନ.sita gives ସିତ, not ସୀତା. Use capitals for long vowels.ganesha gives ଗନେଶ; the name is spelt with ଣ, so type gaNesha.krishna gives କ୍ରିଶ୍ନ. Type kRShNa for କୃଷ୍ଣ.a or a capital you need.An Odia keyboard layout (Inscript) puts each letter on its own key. It's fast once you've learned it, but that takes weeks. Phonetic typing uses the English keyboard you already know, works the same on every computer and phone, and needs nothing installed. It's also how most people search and chat in Odia online, so the skill carries over.
When you're ready to write for real, open the Odia typing notepad. When you're comfortable, try voice typing for long passages, or Sanskrit in Odia script for shlokas.
