ITRANS is a way of writing Indian scripts with the plain letters on an English keyboard. It was designed in the 1990s, before most computers could show Odia at all, and it is still the most common scheme for typing Sanskrit. Notelo uses ITRANS for Odia, with a few shortcuts that make everyday words quicker to type.
The table below lists every letter in the order of the Sanskrit alphabet (svara first, then the five vargas, then the semivowels and sibilants). Where more than one key works, all of them are listed; the first is the one we suggest. The middle column shows each vowel as a sign on କ, which is how you'll see it inside words.
The same chart is in the notepad above: open Keys and tap any letter to insert it.

After a consonant a vowel becomes a sign. Here is କ with every sign and the keys that produce it.
| Keys | kA | ki | kI | ku | kU | kR | ke | kai | ko | kau | kaM | kaH | k |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Odia | କା | କି | କୀ | କୁ | କୂ | କୃ | କେ | କୈ | କୋ | କୌ | କଂ | କଃ | କ୍ |
You never type a halanta to join letters. Type the consonants one after another and they join: n + t + i gives ନ୍ତି. These are the joined letters you'll meet most often.
| Joined letter | Keys | Example |
|---|---|---|
| କ୍ଷ | xa | kShamA → କ୍ଷମା |
| ଜ୍ଞ | GYa | GYAna → ଜ୍ଞାନ |
| ଶ୍ର | shra | shrI → ଶ୍ରୀ |
| ତ୍ର | tra | mitra → ମିତ୍ର |
| ପ୍ର | pra | prema → ପ୍ରେମ |
| ନ୍ତ | nta | shAnti → ଶାନ୍ତି |
| ନ୍ଦ | nda | chandra → ଚନ୍ଦ୍ର |
| ଷ୍ଟ | ShTa | sRShTi → ସୃଷ୍ଟି |
| ଷ୍ଣ | ShNa | viShNu → ବିଷ୍ଣୁ |
| ର୍ମ | rma | dharma → ଧର୍ମ |
| ସ୍ତ | sta | hasta → ହସ୍ତ |
| ସ୍ଥ | stha | sthAna → ସ୍ଥାନ |
| ତ୍ୟ | tya | satya → ସତ୍ୟ |
| ଦ୍ୟ | dya | vidyA → ବିଦ୍ୟା |
| ଦ୍ଧ | ddha | buddhi → ବୁଦ୍ଧି |
| ଙ୍କ | ~Nka | a~Nka → ଅଙ୍କ |
| ଞ୍ଚ | ~ncha | pa~ncha → ପଞ୍ଚ |
| ଣ୍ଟ | NTa | ghaNTA → ଘଣ୍ଟା |
| ମ୍ବ | mba | kadamba → କଦମ୍ବ |
| କ୍ତ | kta | bhakti → ଭକ୍ତି |
RRi. Notelo also accepts a single capital R, so kRShNa → କୃଷ୍ଣ is two keys shorter. RRi and R^i still work.y writes ଯ at the start of a word and ୟ inside it (yoga → ଯୋଗ, satya → ସତ୍ୟ). Capital Y always writes ଯ, for words that keep it inside (aYodhyA → ଅଯୋଧ୍ୟା).V gives ଵ and w gives ୱ.2026 → ୨୦୨୬. You can switch this off in the settings to keep 0–9.vAk → ବାକ୍). If you write modern Odia, turn off Sanskrit word endings in the settings and rAm gives ରାମ.| Keys | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+M | Switch between Odia and English typing |
| Esc | Keep the word you are typing in English |
| Backspace | Remove one Roman letter from the word you are typing |
| Alt+V | Start or stop voice typing |
| Alt+N | New note |
Put the chart to use in the Odia typing notepad. To learn the keys by doing, try the practice lessons. For the sound of each letter, see the Odia alphabet chart.
